For the past two decades, hog producers in North Carolina have come under increased regulation through an ongoing effort to mitigate the environmental impact of swine production. This includes a permanent moratorium on the expansion of existing hog farms and the development of new ones, with a provision that new permits can be issued only to farms that meet five specific environmental performance standards. At the same time, the state adopted a renewable portfolio standard (RPS) that includes a specific carve-out for swine-based electricity. Coupled together, the environmental quality standards and renewable energy goals make a strong case to site renewable energy projects at hog farms. This webinar will include an overview of the state’s pork industry and bioenergy project activity, an overview of RPS requirements and progress, and a case study of an operating swine waste project benefitting from the program.
